Hinchingbrooke Gastroenterology Team investigate and treat a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions. We liaise closely with our upper gastrointestinal and colorectal surgical colleagues in the investigation and care of our patients. Our team consists of 3 gastroenterology consultants, a nurse consultant endoscopist and a nurse specialising in the support of patients with upper gastrointestinal (UGI) and hepatopancreatobiliary cancer (UGI specialist nurse). Our consultants have a wide range of interests including inflammatory bowel disease, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, upper gastrointestinal cancer, nutrition and general hepatology.
We hold general clinics for patients with gastrointestinal conditions in the treatment centre on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. We hold a special clinic for patients referred urgently under the 2 week wait system on Tuesday afternoons; these patients attend for both a clinic assessment and a gastroscopy in the procedure unit. We run a non-urgent dyspepsia service for selected patients referred by the GP for direct access gastroscopy.
Our consultants also run community clinics at Doddington on Thursday mornings and Ely on Monday afternoons.
The gastroenterologists perform gastroscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy, both diagnostic and therapeutic, including stent insertion and polypectomy. Dr Shaukat is skilled at endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). We run a bowel cancer screening service. Dr Roberts runs a gastrointestinal physiology service at Papworth Hospital.
