Medical Assessment Unit Celebrates 10th Birthday

The Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) at Hinchingbrooke Hospital celebrated its 10th Birthday on Thursday 1st December, by holding a party.

The Medical Assessment Unit first opened ten years ago to provide essential support to the Emergency Department and to assist in reducing waiting times.

In that time many changes have taken place, including a complete redesign and refurbishment of the department to comply with single-sex accommodation.

Since 2001 the department has also seen an increase in the number of patients coming through the doors, from 6024 in 2001/2002 to 7287 in 2010/2011.

Patients are most likely to be referred to the unit either by their GP or by a doctor in the Emergency Department. The MAU team can then ensure that patients receive the most appropriate treatment quickly and efficiently which alleviates the pressure on the Emergency Department.

Judy Ophield, MAU Manager said, “Over the years the department has seen many changes and our staff have adjusted and adapted to continue to provide first class care for our patients. Today is a celebration of the 10 years since we first opened and how far we have come.”
