A memorial tree was planted in Hinchingbrooke Country Park on Sunday 20th November, for families who have lost a child during miscarriage or early birth.
The tree, which was donated by the hospital, was organised when mum of two Zoe Drinkwater, aged 29, contacted Hinchingbrooke Hospital to see if there was a place for bereaved families to remember the child that they had lost.
Parents who lose a child during a miscarriage or just after birth can now tie a ribbon, in a colour of their choice, to the 8ft oak tree as a way of remembering and finding comfort that they are not alone.
A plaque with the words ‘From small acorns grow mighty oaks,’ was also added to the tree.
Jo Shaw, Bereavement Co-ordinator at Hinchingbrooke Health Care NHS Trust said, “We are pleased to be able support this cause at the Trust as a place for parents to visit. There are many parents affected by pregnancy loss who do not have a place to visit in memory of their baby. To be able to choose a ribbon and place on the memorial tree in recognition of the loss of their baby, can be very poignant and special.”
The ceremony which took place in Hinchingbrooke Country Park at 2pm on Sunday 20th November, was held by Reverend Brian Atling who said a few words and staff from Hinchingbrooke Hospital and parents and families also attended.
Zoe Drinkwater, 29 from Godmanchester said, “It was after losing my son that I felt that there should be somewhere that I can remember him. I didn’t want to have him buried in a cemetery and having the tree with the ribbons tied to it will hopefully give parents a place to grieve and give them comfort that they are not alone.”
The tree is located near the Hinchingbrooke Country Park café and families can bring their own ribbon along to add to one of the branches.
