What is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is the term given to a sensation of noise which is heard by an individual in the ears or in the head, which has not come from the outside world. Many common sounds include ringing, whistling, buzzing, rushing, humming, hissing and roaring.

There is ongoing research to help people understand more about tinnitus. Although there is no cure, there are many things that can be used to help you cope, and learn to live with it. However, some theories have shown that tinnitus can be caused by:

  • Hearing loss
  • Ear or head injury
  • Noise exposure
  • Ear infections
  • Disease within the ear
  • Stress
  • Medication

Tinnitus can affect people in different ways. Some people learn to put up with the noise, but others find it very distressing as it starts to affect their everyday lives.

What do you do if you think you have Tinnitus?

Firstly, visit your G.P. Here they will be able to examine your ears, making sure they look healthy. If your ears show excessive wax or infections, you will receive treatment from your doctor to help this.

A referral to the Ears Nose and Throat Specialist will be put in place to check the tinnitus. Here, a hearing test, C.T scan, and x-rays may be carried out if necessary. This is to make sure the tinnitus is not being caused by anything serious.

Once, the ENT specialist has checked the patient's tinnitus, a referral to Hearing therapist for tinnitus counselling will be made. Here the patient will receive one to one help and advice, to help cope with the tinnitus.
