General Medicine

The general medicine department provides a comprehensive service in clinical medicine and is committed to developing sub-specialty services in Huntingdonshire and surrounding areas to meet the needs of patients in its own and other districts.

The department of medicine has close links with surrounding primary and secondary care providers and links with Addenbrooke's and Papworth Hospitals.

Hinchingbrooke provides comprehensive Rheumatology, Oncology and Neurology in collaboration with the Cambridge University Clinical School and Addenbrooke's Hospital.

Facilities

The medical unit has four general wards as well as the use of a ward for day cases. There is a negative pressure isolation room for the management of patients with multi-drug resistant TB and other appropriate conditions on Walnut Ward.

For emergency admissions, a 20-bedded 'state of the art' medical assessment unit (MAU) has proved highly efficient and effective. The Consultant 'on-take' for the day is responsible for patients admitted to the unit. When admitted, a ward-based system of consultant responsibility is in operation whereby all patients on one ward belong to a named medical firm irrespective of the admitting consultant.

Our Critical Care Unit (CCU) comprises seven beds and the anaesthetic consultant intensivists provide close support for patients on the CCU.

Daily Outpatient Clinics are held in the Treatment Centre

In 2007/08 there were 7,045 general medical inpatient admissions and 3,839 outpatient attendances.
