The work done in the unit

The general surgical department at Hinchingbrooke Hospital provides elective and acute care to the residents of Huntingdon and the surrounding areas.

The department comprise of 3 units:

  • Colorectal
  • Upper GI
  • Breast / General paediatric and plastics

There is also some paediatric and plastics.

All surgeons carry out advanced laparoscopic (Key hole surgery) and open surgery.

We have use of the new Treatment centre and the new re-furbished wards which are compliant with Infection control.

The department provides an endoscopy service which includes:

  • Colonoscopies
  • Gastroscopies

For diagnostic and therapeutic treatments.

Our out patients clinics are carried out in the new Treatment Centre.

We are achieving current national targets:

  • This includes the 2 week referral of suspected cancers, inclusive of upper GI tract and breast.
  • 18 week pathway to see treat all other general surgery conditions.

Community and hospital care

We are actively involved in the community though our specialist nurse practitioners for cancer and stoma care.

Our palliative care team works with our hospital setting and community to support cancer patients and the chronically ill patients.
