Breast Care Specialist Nurses
The nurses are the patients advocate and key worker, as part of the breast multi-disciplinary team, Breast Surgeon, Plastic surgeon, Anaesthetists, Oncologists, Radiologist and Pathologists.
They provide support and written advice on all aspects of breast cancer treatment from diagnosis, during the patients stay for surgery, and through their continuing treatments.
Pre-operative assessments are carried out by the breast care specialist nurses to ensure continuation of care for the patients and good communication, where necessary, with the relevant Anaesthetists.
A bra and breast prosthesis fitting service is offered to patients whilst on the ward.
Also a nurse led seroma aspiration service is offered, which means that patients can usually be treated more promptly. The breast care specialist nurses have extra qualifications in counselling and can offer limited ongoing sessions with those patients who are struggling to come to terms with their diagnosis.
Aromatherapy and acupuncture can be arranged alongside medical treatments, to help with anxieties and some side effects of treatments.
