After your baby is born the midwife will perform some initial checks. You will then be offered a more detailed top-to-toe physical examination of your baby within 72 hours of birth (usually in hospital).
The examination is normally carried out by one of the healthcare professionals in the maternity unit, the midwife, junior doctor or paediatrician when your baby is calm and settled. As part of an overall top-to-toe physical assessment, the healthcare professional will also conduct a number of specific screening examinations to identify whether there are any problems or conditions which may need monitoring, further investigation or treatment.
The clinic runs from Monday - Saturday from 09.00am till midday, on a Sunday there are no set clinic times but examinations will be undertaken. If you have gone home with you baby the previous afternoon or have had a home birth you will be given an appointment time for you to come back to the hospital to have the examination performed. Otherwise your baby will have the examination while you are in hospital, normally by your bedside while you are present.
