Nurse and Optometrist Practitioners

Our senior nurse practitioners manage the daily running of the eye clinics and work with our optometrists to provide clinics for emergency eye conditions, peroperative and postoperative eye surgery clinics and perform routine laser procedures.

Consultants

Mr Chris Stephenson FRCS
Mr Stephenson is the Clinical Lead for Ophthalmology. He qualified from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburgh, South Africa in 1983 and initially worked in general practice before specialising in ophthalmology. He completed a doctorate in corneal laser therapy at St Thomas' Hospital and works as a consultant in Hinchingbrooke and Addenbrooke's Hospitals, with a subspecialist interest in corneal, cataract and refractive surgery.

Mr Cornelius Rene MBBS, FRCOphth
Mr Rene has been a practising ophthalmologist since 1987 and completed subspeciality training at Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham and Moorfields Eye Hospital in oculoplastic, lacrimal and orbital surgery. He was appointed as a consultant in 1998 and works at both Hinchingbrooke and Addenbrooke's Hospitals. Mr Rene's specialist interests are lacrimal disorders (problems with the tear drainage system), eyelid plastic surgery and orbital surgery (eye socket surgery) including thyroid eye disease and orbital tumours.

Mr Declan Flanagan MBBS, FRCOphth
Mr Flanagan trained in ophthalmology at Moorfields Eye Hospital. His specialist interests are cataract surgery and retinal disease, particularly diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. He has a strong interest in community eye care and has established an extensive community diabetic retinopathy programme in the region. He works at Hinchingbrooke Hospital and Moorfields Hospital, where he is Associate Medical Director. He continues to work closely with the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, in which he has held a number of posts.

Mrs Melanie Hingorani MA, MBBS, MD, FRCOphth
Mrs Hingorani graduated from Oxford University and Guy's Hospital Medical School. She completed basic ophthalmic training in London and was awarded a doctorate for her scientific research into inflammatory eye conditions in children and adults at the Institute of Ophthalmology. She completed higher ophthalmic training in Moorfields Eye Hospital and the Western Eye Hospitals in London and undertook advanced subspecialist fellowships in both corneal and cataract disease and in paediatrics and adult eye movement disorders at Moorfields. She now works at Hinchingbrooke and the Moorfields Eye Unit at Bedford. Mrs Hingorani's specialist interests are paediatric eye disease, and squints and eye movement disorders in both children and adults.

Mr Rupert Bourne MBBS, MD, FRCOphth
Mr Bourne trained in Oxford and Moorfields Hospital, and London and underwent extensive advanced glaucoma training in both Moorfields and the University of California San Diego, USA. He has published extensively in the field of glaucoma and has a particular interest in glaucoma epidemiology. He is head of the glaucoma service at Hinchingbrooke and also works in the Moorfields Unit at Bedford and as an honorary consultant at Addenbrooke's. He also holds posts as an honorary senior lecturer at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and honorary Professor in the Optometry Department at the Anglia Ruskin University.

Ms Arabella Poulson MBBS, FRCOphth
Ms Poulson trained in the East Anglia Region where she completed her higher surgical training and her subspciality vitreoretinal training. Her main appointment is at Addenbrooke's Hospital and she runs a weekly vitreoretinal clinic at Hinchingbrooke.

Ms Lydia Chang MBBS, MD, FRCOphth
Ms Chang completed her ophthalmology training in London and gained a doctorate from her research in the field of glaucoma. She has undergone advanced glaucoma subspeciality training in Moorfields Hospital and her interests are glaucoma, both medical and surgical care, with a particular interest in share community care of glaucoma patients.

Mr Aires Lobo FRCOphth
Mr Lobo trained at Moorfields Hospital and now works at Hinchingbrooke and at the Moorfields Eye Unit at Bedford, where he is Lead Clinician for ophthalmology. He specialises in all areas of medical retina ophthalmology and runs the intravitreal injection service for wet macular degeneration in these regions.
