The Hospital Inpatient Information Handbook explains what to bring into hospital with you. Please bring all the medicines (anything taken by mouth, inhaled, internally, creams etc) that you use at home when you come into hospital. This is because they tell our Doctors and Nurses and Pharmacists about your current treatment.
The Hospital has a system for using patient’s own medicines while they are in hospital which is called ‘Patients Own Drugs Scheme’. This means that on admission to hospital, any medicine that you bring in with you will be placed in a bedside locker and may be used to treat you whilst you are in hospital.
A supply of medicines to take home will be provided for you by the hospital. This may contain both medicines that were brought into the hospital and new supplies provided by the hospital pharmacy. If any medicines have been stopped, started or had their dose changed during your stay, you will be informed by a member of the ward team and the contents of your bedside locker will be corrected.
If you have any queries about any of the above, ask to speak to the ward pharmacist or ward pharmacy technician or a member of the nursing staff.
Information from a questionnaire to the local Parkinson’s Disease Society group identified that patients were not always getting their medicines at the appropriate times when in hospital. The hospital has developed a scheme called ‘self / designated carer administration of medicines scheme’ which provides the opportunity for patients and / or carers to remain in control of their medicine administration.
Through this scheme we aim to help you to:
The scheme is not compulsory and you must not feel that you have to take part even if asked. If you are asked and are interested in taking part, then before starting a nurse or pharmacist will explain the scheme to you more fully.
The Pharmacy dispenses medicines prescribed within the hospital outpatient clinics. Prescriptions may be written on white hospital only prescriptions or on green community prescriptions. If you are given a white prescription it can only be dispensed by the hospital pharmacy, however, if you are given a green prescription this is for dispensing by any retail pharmacy.
