Training Sessions

The Library offers a programme of training in searching skills.  We are currently offering the training sessions listed below. 

To book onto a session please email hch-tr.libraryteam@nhs.net or call 01480 363578 for further information.

Individual and small group training can also be arranged - please call us to discuss your training needs.

We ask for basic computer literacy for attendance at our training sessions.  If you would like to find out about IT training sessions available to you, please contact your local IT department.

Introduction to searching healthcare databases

2 hrs - you should have basic computer literacy and a NHS Athens password

An introduction to the key elements of literature searching (using the NHS Evidence Healthcare Databases Advanced Search) in order to find relevant journal articles. The training will enable you to:

  • access the healthcare literature databases - Medline, Embase, BNI, Cinahl etc
  • understand basic search skills - including focusing a search question; searching using textwords/keywords; searching using database thesaurus terms; combining searches using 'AND', 'OR' etc
  • construct hands-on searches using these skills
  • select and download search results and full-text articles

Searching NHS Evidence

1 hr - you should have basic literature search skills and a NHS Athens password

NHS Evidence enables access to accredited clinical and non-clinical evidence and best practice through a web-based portal. Learn how to navigate the resource in this one hour session. This training will introduce you to:

  • the different elements of the NHS Evidence portal 
  • browsing and searching NHS Evidence
  • Saving searches and setting up alerts
